What is Radon gas? Radon Gas is a deadly gas which is odorless, scentless, and colorless, yet is toxic and can lead to cancer. What is the best way to stay safe from this gas? Every house has radon, and while radon is not good for you, it is relatively harmless in small quantities. The issue arises when a house is filled with radon gas which rises from within the ground below and fills the house. It is caused by decaying granite. If this gas gets concentrated enough it can be harmful. Nationally, approximately 1/3 of all homes have a level which is deemed toxic by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The EPA Says that radon gas causes more than 20,000 related cancer deaths every year. While drunk driving kills about 17,000 per year. The safe target level of radon gas is 4.0 pCi/L, although many homes are much higher than this.
Before buying or selling a home in Colorado, it is best to have a radon test done to ensure that a home is considered safe. If the home does have more than the recommended levels of radon, a radon venting system can be installed to capture and remove the gas, before it enters the home. This mitigation system can reduce the radon levels up to 99% from its original level.
It is generally recommended to get a radon test when buying or selling a home in Colorado. The cost ranges from $20 to $100 and only takes 48 hours to complete. Radon mitigation systems generally cost between $700 and $2,000 to install.
